EPILOGUE:
The Northern Pacific Railway was a 6,800-mile system in seven Northern States, and it reached two Canadian Provinces. Its transcontinental main line extended westward from the Twin Cities (Minneapolis and St. Paul) and the Head-of-the-Lakes (the Twin Ports of Duluth and Superior) to the Pacific North Coast port cities of Seattle, Tacoma, and Portland. With its rich agricultural empire and its vast natural resources, Northern Pacific had a decided impact upon the continued development of the Great Northwest from its completion as the "First Northern Transcontinental" in 1883 right up to Merger Day in March 1970. It provided the best possible freight train service along the "Main Street of the Northwest". Its scheduled freight trains manifested its modern day slogan: "This is the way to run a railroad; this is the way we run Northern Pacific."
