Coalport Cup & Saucer Scalloped Hand Painted Red Floral Spray Gold 1891-1919
A beautiful  COALPORT Scalloped CUP & SAUCER Hand Painted FLORAL SPRAYS with WIDE MOTTLED MAGENTA Band & Gold Trim
    , Circa 1891-1919 from
    Staffordshire, England
Coalport has a long and colorful history in the production of fine china with quality and craftsmanship as their hallmarks since the firm was founded in 1750 by Squire Brown of Caughley Hall in Shropshire using clay and coal from his estate.  John Rose (1772-1841), described as a purposeful and exacting individual, was apprenticed to Thomas Turner who was a potter with a revolutionary approach to making porcelain.  In 1799 when Squire Brown fell ill, Rose bought the pottery establishing a ceramic manufactory which would produce Coalport China.  Rose’s vision was to produce the highest quality bone china with the most brilliant colors possible.  In 1899 Coalport China (John Rose & Co.), became a limited liability company under its new owner, Peter Bruff.   The Bruff family continued to run the business until the 1924 purchase by Cauldon Potteries, Ltd.  Coalport continued as a separate concern, but in 1926 china production was moved from Shropshire to Cauldon Place Works in Shelton, Staffordshire.  When Cauldon went into receivership in 1932, Coalport was acquired by Harrison & Son.  Coalport became a member of the Wedgewood Group in 1967 and continues its high quality production to this date.
This superb quality decorative cup & saucer set has the most beautiful wide dark mottled magenta bands and gold highlights on the handle.  The hand painted floral sprays are just outstanding.  The interior of the cup and the saucer are so decorated.  In addition, the outside of the cup has large hand painted floral sprays on both sides and a bolder gold line at the bottom of the scalloped foot.  This is so striking.
While this set is classified as used, we can find no chips, nicks, scratches, cracks, hairlines, or repairs.  There is one tiny pinhead sized spot opposite the handle where some white shows through the magenta.  See photo #2 looking just to the right of 12 o'clock position near the top rim.  Otherwise, there appears to be absolutely no wear to the vivid colors and no crazing.  The lack of utensil scratches on the cup and saucer attests to the high quality of the bone china.  There is no wear to the gold trim on the saucer or cup.  The cup & saucer are beautiful and classically decorated.
The saucer has a diameter of 5 7/8" and a height of 3/4" while the cup has a diameter of 3 7/8" and stands 2 1/4" high.
As collectors ourselves, we tend to be very picky and find it necessary to point out anything we see.  We believe you will be very satisfied with this decorative cup & saucer set.  The mark on both is identified by Geoffrey Godden's
Encyclopaedia of British Pottery and Porcelain Marks
as mark #959 used in the 1891-1919 time period since the country of origin is identified as England (used after 1891), not "made in England" (used after 1920).
