    INTRODUCTION
Cabooses are all over the place. We have often thought that in our part of the country one would not have to travel more than a few minutes by car to arrive at a privately-owned or display caboose. Railroad enthusiasts are great collectors, and the ultimate collectible is to have your own full-size rail car. No type of car fits the bill better than a caboose.
The railroad companies have cooperated in this venture. Their cooperation is partly motivated by economics-they can get more money for a caboose by selling it to a private party than to a scrap dealer. This was especially true when the remaining wood cabooses were being removed from service. At one time it was easy for the railroad, or a scrap company, to set a wood car on fire, burning off the undesirable wood so that the steel could be harvested from the remains. Tightening of burning regulations effectively eliminated this salvage method and scrappers had to invest more to scrap a wood-sided car, so they had to bid less on the original purchase to maintain their profit requirements.
The railroad companies deserve credit, too, for the many donations of cabooses that have been made over the years. In the case of C&O/B&O, and continuing into the CSX era with C&O and B&O cars, the quantity donated has been significant. Good will and positive public relations are two reasons. But a desire to support true historical causes is also an element. For this last point, no better example exists than the support CSX has given to the B&O Railroad Museum in Baltimore. On rare and special occasions, the railroad has even invested money to cosmetically refurbish a car before a donation.
